What is the Peter F. Collier Award for Ethics in Journalism?

The Peter F. Collier Award for Ethics in Journalism celebrates acts of journalism by student and professional journalists that meet the highest ethical standards in the face of pressure or incentives to do otherwise. The award is administered by the NYU Carter Journalism Institute’s Ethics and Journalism Initiative (EJI). This is the award’s inaugural year, and it will be granted annually. 

Nathan Collier, founder and chairman of the Collier Companies, is sponsoring the award in honor of his great grand uncle, Peter F. Collier, who emigrated from Ireland in 1866, became a book publisher, and founded the renowned magazine, Collier’s Weekly, in 1888. 

Is my work eligible for consideration?

To be eligible for consideration for the Collier Ethics in Journalism Award, submissions must be print, online, audio, video, or visual projects published by a journalist or team of journalists between September 1, 2023 and September 1, 2024.

 How many awards will be granted?

Awards will be granted in the following categories:

  • A $5,000 award or scholarship for ethical work by a high school, college, or graduate student ($500 for second place, $250 for third place)
  • A $10,000 award for ethical work by a local journalist with regional significance ($1,000 for second place, $500 for third place)
  • A $15,000 award for ethical work by a professional journalist or team with national or international impact/significance ($2,500 for second place, $1,000 for third place)

How do I submit?

The submission portal will open in September 2024.

Is there a submission fee?

No.

When are submissions due?

Submissions are due in December 2024.

Who are the judges?

Submissions will be assessed by an esteemed panel of judges from across the news media landscape. The inaugural panel for the 2025 Collier Award in Journalism can be found under the “Judges” tab.

When will winners be announced?

The winners will be announced in Spring 2025. Award winners will receive a monetary prize and will be celebrated at the inaugural NYU Ethics and Journalism Awards and Symposium.
