In the course of reporting, journalists face myriad safety and security risks: entering dangerous, new, and unknown environments like protests and demonstrations, interviewing unpredictable sources, encountering hostility to press, navigating digital surveillance and online and in-person harassment. These risks can appear in reporting across beats, from politics and law enforcement to climate and immigration, and affect journalists of different identities and backgrounds differently.
On Wednesday, September 9, the Ethics and Journalism Initiative will welcome special guest, Kerry Paterson, VP of Global Security, News at NBC Universal and former director of global safety, risk and resilience at the Associated Press and deputy director of emergencies at the Committee to Protect Journalists, for an hour-long in-person journalism security workshop. In conversation with Initiative director Stephen J. Adler, Paterson will offer concrete strategies and guidance for freelance, staff, and student reporters on protecting yourself and your newsroom.
